Minnesota Sings Wabasha-Kellogg Amateur Competition

Minnesota Sings is a competition between cities throughout our great state–designed for amateur singers. Vocalists compete for the honor of representing their city and for the opportunity to win some wonderful prizes. There are two divisions: 13 to 20-year-olds and 21 and older. For the 13-20 age group contestants must be between the ages of 13-20 on or before Saturday October 7, 2023, no exceptions.

The top two Wabasha-Kellogg singers from each age division will represent our towns at the 10th Annual Minnesota Sings competition Saturday & Sunday, October 7-8, 2023, at the Fairmont Opera House in Fairmont MN. Minnesota Sings finalist contestants will compete for over $30,000 in prizes! More information can be found at www.minnesotasings.com

How To Register for Wabasha-Kellogg Minnesota Sings

Contestants must be a Minnesota resident & live within 5 miles of Wabasha or Kellogg MN

Registration Forms:

  • Download form at  rjac.org/minnesota-sings/ or at wabashamn.org 
  • Pick one up at the Wabasha Public Library, Wabasha Chamber office or The Front Porch

Deliver completed registration forms by Friday June 3, 2023 including $10.00 registration fee to:

  • RJAC, PO Box 212, Wabasha MN 55981
  • Any RJAC board member
  • Email form to rjac.mn@gmail.com and frontporchbar@outlook.com.
  • If the $10.00 registration fee has not been prepaid bring it to the competition by 5pm June 5, 2023 and give it to Jenn Rohrer

General Rules

Email music track by Friday June 3, 2023 by 7pm to frontporchbar@outlook.com and rjac.mn@gmail.com

  • Song & Music: Contestants must provide your mp3 or  backing track to sing to. You may use a commercially produced one or record your own. Your MP3 or WAV backing track MUST be emailed to rjac.mn@gmail.com by Friday June 3, 2023 at 7pm to compete.
  • Your song may include background singers and/or harmonies.
  • Total length of your song may not exceed 5 minutes.
  • Lyrics must not contain any profanity.
  • The song has to be memorized (no video screen) & the words need to be family-friendly.
  • Vocalists have to sing to a backing track that cannot exceed five minutes.
  • You can sing any type of music from Broadway to Rock N’ Roll, Country, Country Rock, Jazz, Swing, Blues, Contemporary Christian, Arias from Operas, and much more.

Judging Criteria

Vocalists will be judged based on the criteria listed below and will receive the judge’s brief comments immediately following their performance. All judges’ decisions are final.  ​

  • Vocal Skills: Includes pitch, breath control, dynamics, phrasing, enunciation, and tone.
  • Presentation Skills:  Includes eye contact, body expression, facial expression, attire, and microphone technique.
  • Audience Response to Performance: Based on the judge’s observation
  • Choice of Material: Singer chooses a proper song to showcase their abilities
  • Judge’s Overall Impression of your Performance: At the discretion of judges

Event held Monday, June 5, 2023 at 5:30 pm The Front Porch in Kellogg MN.
